One of the first things you’ll learn as a photographer or other imaging professional is that simply buying a scanner and spending hours poring over its user manual is not going to cut it. The best way to learn the ins and outs of any scanner is through experience by acquiring an understanding of how they function under real-world conditions. In order for you to properly master your craft, you need to know how your gear works—and quickly. In this blog post, we’ll show you why this old world device remains one of the most popular devices in our shop – not for its resolution – but for its ease-of-use and reliability. The scanmaster elm has been the workhorse in our shop for years and we proudly stand by its effectiveness and reliability. It’s a manual flatbed scanner and offers an extremely low-cost way to get started scanning photos. If you’re looking for a device that will get you up and running with minimal costs, this is definitely somewhere to start. We’ll be using the scanmaster elm in conjunction with Adobe Photoshop for editing photos, making slideshows and sharing them on the web. It’s a small device so it can be used in tight spaces and has a footprint that’s small enough to be mobile. It also produces excellent image quality given its price. The scanmaster elm is $130 USD, but if you purchase it with gimbal mount adapters (sold separately), you can use it on any flat surface, including wood, glass or metal—making it an extremely versatile scanner. So, let’s get started! First, set up your scanner following the mini-guide in the scanmaster elm user manual. It’s a short 10-page guide and even if you’ve never used a flatbed scanner before, it should take only 15 minutes to complete. The first thing you’ll notice is that the scanmaster elm does not come with any feet. We recommend purchasing some right away because they make it easier to scan photos and keep any object your scanning from falling off of the scanner bed. Feet are sold separately but should only cost about $2 USD (We like 50 mm x 50mm). Now, let’s get started with some real world scanning! Using the scanmaster elm is like working with any other scanner. The difference is that you don’t have to spend time rotating or flipping your image. This usually takes several minutes and we’ve found that we almost always have to do the following: This ends up wasting a lot of our time so here are a few tips to help us avoid this problem: In order to take advantage of the full resolution of the scanmaster elm, you must use a photo editing application such as Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. We recommend that you enter “300 dpi” as your scan settings. cfa1e77820
